In this part of the book I have started to pity Holden. He seems to feel isolated from the world around him, and it seems like he acts older and independent to connect with other people, which seems hard for him. I do not think he believes he fits into his world because all he does is judge people and call them 'phony', implying that he is the only one who isn't 'phony'.

I think Jane is a symbol for connection with the world, because he says he misses her and she is all he thinks about. Jane is the only person he has seemed to really like and miss, besides his beloved siblings. He is a very social person yet at the same time, it seems like he has an obsession for judging other people, which I think is just done to make himself feel better about his boring, normal life.

It also seems like the ducks in the pond in Central Park are a symbol of what he knows. Everything in his life has left and he wants to know why. That is why he keeps asking about them, on page 60 it says,"You know those ducks in the lagoon near central park south? That little lake? By any chance?" He wants to know if they were forced to leave or they left willingly.
