I decided to do the visual presentation. I created a movie poster for The Catcher in the Rye. I included important symbols into my movie poster including the carousel and the fantasy of the catcher in the rye.
Before I started the project I had a few ideas to include into my poster. I wanted to make the poster abstract to represent Holden's fantasy of being the catcher in the rye. Once I started my poster everything fell in to place. I used the abstract drips to connect the symbols. I also wanted to put a mini theme on the poster because after studying many other movie posters, like the ones of Martian and Divergent, I realized the all had a theme under or above the title. I decided to use the theme "protect the innocence" This theme also connected to the symbols, so it was perfect for the poster. Both the symbols represent innocence and the protection of it. The catcher in the rye stood as a protector of innocence and the cliff stood as a fall into adulthood. The carousel stood as a symbol for "never getting old", like how the carousel spun round and round.
My favorite part of the final piece was the way the entire poster flowed. The symbols and abstract drips flow down which pulls the readers focus to the title at the bottom of the poster. I dislike the colors I choose for the poster. Unfortunately I had a limited color selection for my poster, so I was forced to use unfit colors. I wanted to use a lot of blacks in my poster to represent death, sadness, and depression. I think my poster would have been a lot better if it showed these important feeling associated with the story.
I thought my project would get an 8 on the design rubric for the looks of it because it was nicely drawn and colored. I think it would get a 7 for relevance because it is easily understood and it connects nicely with the book. Then I think it would get a 7 for poignancy because it makes an impact and moves, but I do not think it is that emotionally piercing that it deserves an 8 on the scale. For uniqueness I think I would give myself an 8 because I thought my ideas were original and new, especially the idea to add an abstract feature to represent false reality.
A goal I have set for the next project we do is to improve my presenting skills. I always become so nervous when I present and I forget to share details and I get my words mixed up. To improve my presenting skills I am going to my flash cards for myself so I can remember the questions I need to answer during the presentation.
